Here's What We're Reading this Pride Month
As you probably already know June is Pride month! It is a time to reflect with pride on how far we’ve come, while also understanding that there is still so much more work to be done.
In honor of Pride month we encourage you to do some reading about the history of the LGBTQ community, especially with this year being the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. We also hope that you will take this opportunity to learn more about the experiences of members of the LGBTQ community, especially LGBTQ Older adults.
To get you started, here are a few articles that we are reading this month:
- ‘Stonewall Generation’ Confronts Old Age, Sickness — And Discrimination Kaiser Health recently hosted a panel on inclusive care for LGBT seniors. Their discussion highlighted the many challenges LGBT older adults face while they try to access the care that they need.
- A New Project Aims to Make Residential Care More LGBT-Friendly More than one million direct care workers provide support and care to older adults nationwide; unfortunately, many of those workers lack the training and cultural competency to work with LGBT older adults. In order to address this gap the Long Term Care Equality Index was launched.
- Pride Month: Caregiving in LGBT Communities In LGBT communities, caregivers face unique challenges unlike any other group. Despite those challenges LGBT older adults and caregivers continue to persevere.
- The Nation's Largest LGBTQ-Inclusive Affordable Housing For Older Adults Studies show that LGBT seniors face a number of barriers as they attempt to access housing. In response to these alarming findings, the LGBT older adult advocacy group SAGE embarked on a National LGBT Elder Housing Initiative. Part of this included building New York City’s first property specializing in housing LGBT older adults.
- Before Stonewall Filmmaker Greta Schiller on Life as a Lesbian Teen at the Time of the Stonewall Riots A film-maker reflects on her experiences as well as the experiences of the LGBT community around the time of the Stonewall Riots.
- Here's How You Can Be a Better LGBTQ Ally What does it mean to be an ally? This article suggests some ways in and how can you be a better ally during pride month (and all year round).
- The Court Cases That Changed L.G.B.T.Q. Rights Learn more about the court cases that gave the LGBT community protection against some of the laws that targeted and mistreated them.
- For LGBT people of color, equality has been a multi-layered fight LGBT people of color face both racism and homophobia as they seek equality.
- LGBT Health Is Inseparable from LGBT Rights LGBT people need more equality to achieve better health outcomes.
- Generations of Mentorship: Conversations With L.G.B.T.Q. Elders As gay, lesbian and transgender communities become less stigmatized — in part thanks to mentor-mentee relationships — will it be easier for young people to imagine a life where they actually grow old?
In June of 2017 H.O.M.E. launched the Welcoming LGBT Seniors at H.O.M.E. initiative. At H.O.M.E., we want to ensure that all residents are treated fairly and welcomed for who they are. In line with our mission and culture, creating a warm environment for and providing services that meet the needs of LGBT residents will enrich our role in providing quality, person-centered programming for low-income seniors.
