This Pride Month Let's Thank LGBT Seniors!

Happy Pride! This year Pride Month is especially meaningful because it's also the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots!

I recently ran into this video, LGBT Seniors Tell Their Stories , that showed the different experiences that many LGBT seniors had before our time, before gay marriage was legalized before Pride month even existed. It highlights stories of seniors who lived in a time of fear of getting arrested if they were gay, lived in a time of secrecy, those who lived in a time were there were no civil rights for the LGBT community, and the struggles of coming out to parents.

Despite the struggles LGBT seniors faced as young people and as adults, they helped pave the way for the LGBT community. This idea has resonated with young people as was made clear in the comments on that video, where people showed their appreciation to those LGBT seniors.

Without the Stonewall Riots in 1969, or people like Kay Tobin Lahusen and Diana Davies who were one of the first LGBT photojournalists in the United States documenting LGBT political communities, the LGBT community would not have had the rights that they have today. That is why is it so important to show our appreciation for LGBT Seniors! For every person there is a story and every story matters.

Thank you LGBT Seniors for paving the way!

In June of 2017 H.O.M.E. launched the Welcoming LGBT Seniors at H.O.M.E. initiative. At H.O.M.E., we want to ensure that all residents are treated fairly and welcomed for who they are. In line with our mission and culture, creating a warm environment for and providing services that meet the needs of LGBT residents will enrich our role in providing quality, person-centered programming for low-income seniors.
