Here's what two volunteers say about their Guest Chef experience
Volunteering makes a big difference! Not only does volunteering make a difference for those being served, but it also has an impact on those serving.
Don't believe me? Take it from these volunteers who regularly serve and share meals with seniors at Pat Crowley House.
We call volunteers who serve meals at Good Life Senior Residences "Guest Chefs." It's a unique opportunity to prepare a meal and share it with senior residents, who eat family-style together at lunch and dinner.
Guest Chefs Catherine and Deborah are regular volunteers. Here's what they have to say about their experience.
Catherine says:
"Volunteering has been an important part of my life; to be of service began with my grandparents who together were active in the March of Dimes and other causes. They were an exceptionally close couple who set a standard of open arms for all of us. H.O.M.E. has brought me to another level of understanding just what service provides. It has taught me how fragile and important people are, we care about each other. A year ago I went through a difficult 4 month period of unemployment; the group were encouraging and helped me believe in myself, on the flip side people do great things in the zenith of their lives and I have a front row seat.Jim has special wine glasses for the group that compliments our meals. Charlotte has deep wisdom we laugh together talk about the world and people. I never tire of hearing their insights opinions and wisdom. Truthfully it is my peace each month for a brief time, where I am safe and loved while being in the company of good friends. In a world in which offers few constants I have found a place (H.O.M.E.) where my feelings, love and curiosity are nurtured. I look forward to this weekend's visit - it's my turn to make the main dish!"Deborah tells us:"My husband George and I have been volunteering as guest chefs at the Pat Crowley House since 2004. Needless to say, the residents are like family to us. While the meal is important (we are there to cook!), the visits and comradery is what we most look forward to.I am constantly on the lookout for new recipes, and sometimes I try them out at home first. I always try for good, fresh quality ingredients and if possible, make the healthier option.Nothing fills my heart more with love than sitting around the dinner table with my PCH family, and hearing joy and abundant laughter.I’ve learned …………. That it is not what I have in my life but who I have in my life that counts."We thank Catherine and Deborah for all they do for seniors at Pat Crowley House! If you would like to find out how to be a Guest Chef, click the link below.
