Associates Board Member Spotlight

Carla YPB Picture.jpgH.O.M.E.'s Associates Board (AB) is a group of emerging leaders who are dedicated to H.O.M.E.'s mission. They come together to support our mission through leadership, fundraising, and volunteer activities.

Periodically, we'd like to introduce you to some of the members of the AB who make a difference in the lives of seniors in Chicago.

Meet Carla:

  1. What’s your name? Where are you from?

Carla Vassilos. I’m from Chicago, IL.

  1. Why did you join the Associates Board of H.O.M.E?

Via the Chicago Bridge (grassroots organization for emerging professionals working with older adults). I was paired with a fantastic mentor Janet Takehara who was then the Program Director at H.O.M.E. One of my goals of the of the mentorship program was to join a non-profit board. Janet suggested H.O.M.E. and 3.5 years later the rest is history.

  1. Why is volunteering important to you?

Volunteering has been a part of my life since middle school. I feel like it’s a bit cliche to say that I get more out of volunteering than I put in, but it’s simply true! Volunteering as a Associates Board member affords me the opportunity to give back by taking advantage of my leadership and organizational skills.

  1. In your current position what is your title and role with your company?

I work for Cigna (health insurance company) as a Quality Excellence Educator. After completing my Master in Social Work in 2010 from the University of Texas at Austin, my career has evolved including some unexpected turns. Several years working in clinical and community health settings has lead to a challenging position providing corporate coaching and workforce development. Additionally, I’ll be presenting at my first conference in October 2017. Wish me luck!

  1. How can others get involved with H.O.M.E or the Associates Board?

We are always looking for and encouraging young professionals to join our board! It’s a great group of folks who enjoying giving back to a valuable organization and spending time with one another. If you’re looking for an opportunity to volunteer alongside high quality people who also care about the community, please consider H.O.M.E.’s Associates B!
