5 Ways to Celebrate Older Americans Month
May is Older Americans Month! Not only is the month an opportunity for seniors to show us how they "Age Out Loud" , it is an opportunity to foster intergenerational bonds and spend time with older adult friends and family members!
Since 1963, OAM has been a time to celebrate older Americans, their stories, and their contributions. Led by the Administration for Community Living(ACL), the annual observance offers a special opportunity to learn about, support, and recognize our nation’s older citizens. This year’s theme, “Age Out Loud,” emphasizes the ways older adults are living their lives with boldness, confidence, and passion while serving as an inspiration to people of all ages.
Here are some ways to celebrate Older Americans Month with an Older Adult in your life:
1. Go for a walk
Spending time with an older adult in your life doesn't have to be anything fancy, it can be something as simple as going on a walk with them. Going out on a walk is an opportunity to explore, stay active, and talk.
2. Post about Them
On Mothers Day a Facebook friend of mine shared a story about her grandmother. The post stuck out to me and I remember reading it and thinking "wow, she must have lived an incredible life."
Have a story you want to share about a senior that has made an impact in your life? Tag H.O.M.E. and we can also share it for you!
We see seniors living boldly and independently each day, and we are here to help them do just that. Throughout the month on Facebook and Twitter, we will be highlighting our clients and how our services help them #AgeOutLoud.

3. Attend an event together
With summer approaching there are so many fun events to check out, especially here in Chicago! You can check out a street festival, attend a talk, catch a game, or visit a museum. After all, you are never too old to learn something new.
4. Share a Meal Together
Meals are a great time to come together and engage with one another! If the older adult in your life enjoys and is able to cook, let them share that with you - and be sure to ask for recipes! If they don't enjoy cooking, or aren't able to anymore, bring them a meal or take them out for a meal.
5. Volunteer Together
Another way to spend time together is by volunteering together. It's also an opportunity to make a difference! From helping older adult homeowners stay warm in their homes in the winter to serving meals to Good Life residents, our volunteers make a difference in the lives of senior Chicagoans every day.
