All-Star Seniors Week: David Ortiz's Intergenerational Impact

All_Star_Sentiors.jpgDo you remember where you were on October 27, 2004? Chances are unless you are a Boston Red Sox fan, you probably won't. On that day, the Boston Red Sox swept the St. Louis Cardinals and won the World Series for the first time in 86 years. It was a wonderful day especially for my favorite player of all time, David Ortiz.

David Ortiz is a special player. He's played in 10 All-Star games, has been named a World Series MVP and is the latest member of the 500 home run club. While his career stats are no doubt impressive its what he does off the field that wins fans and his teammates over.

Like Even in his "old age" Big Papi remains passionate about the game. He speaks his mind when he disagrees with the umpire call and has always had the tendency to break a couple of  bats here and there. Oritz is also a mentor to younger players. He is self-aware of the fact that his words mean something to people so he makes it a point to speak out and inspire. His desire to build relationships with younger players and inspire them to be their best encourages the rest of us to do so. In case you need some motivation this Friday afternoon, listen to his pep-talk for the American Leauge All-Star Game!

Big Papi will be retiring at the end of this season and there is no doubt that the Red Sox and baseball will not be the same without him. Here's hoping his last season continues to be memorable.

As you may know, here at H.O.M.E we love intergenerational relationships, and there is no doubt that baseball can help foster some of those relationships. Want to show a mentor or friend your appreciation for them? Make a gift to H.O.M.E. in their honor!
