Staying Engaged: Planning for summer fun in Chicago

Did you know that engaging in your community and staying socially active can be beneficial to your health as you ageOne study from the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center recently found that highly social older adults had a 70 percent lower rate of cognitive decline than peers who were less social.

While the temperatures are still dubious, Memorial Day and summer are right around the corner. So even though we're not going to see 70s in the forecast this week, it's time to start planning for summer fun in Chicago.

So dust off the winter (and winter-like spring) doldrums, grab a friend or family member, and take a look at the many events for seniors in Chicago.

Here are some great ideas for getting out and about this summer:

1. Parks

Sure, taking a stroll in the park or having a picnic with friends is a great way to take advantage of long summer days. But the park system has lots more to offer - and there are often free events in Chicago! From moongazing to chamber music concerts to nature walks, the Chicago Park District offers events and activities for people with all kinds of interests.

2. Festivals

The wait is over! The list of summer festivals is here. Whether it's art, music, literature, or food that you love, there is bound to be a neighborhood festival for you any weekend during the summer.

3. Attractions

bahai_temple.jpgHistory, art, architecture, and nature - Chicago is a fun destination for tourists. But you don't have to be from out of town to enjoy the sights. Being a tourist in your own city can be fun, and lucky for us, there are lots of attractions in Chicago that are always free or that have special deals for Illinois residents.

4. Senior Centers

Senior centers are a wonderful resource! There is always something going on at your neighborhood center. To find out more, check out CDFSS quarterly Life Enrichment brochure. In addition to useful information about fraud alerts and senior services, you'll find great programs like a Murder Mystery Luncheon and how to attend the Senior Pavilion at the Taste of Chicago in the most recent edition.

There are lots of ways for seniors to stay engaged in Chicago, especially in the summer.
