We invite seniors in the neighborhood, and their families or caregivers, to come to the fair to meet one another and see the options they have to help them live actively and independently. Local businesses are invited to participate and hold booths at the fair to provide additional information about senior options.

Additionally, the fair will offer alternative independent living options for seniors. Take a tour of Nathalie Salmon House’s renovated 5th floor called “Good Life Senior Residences,” a shared intergenerational living option for independent low-income seniors.

Ideas of aging in place are more common today than they were decades before, and Rogers Park and Edgewater have a lot of reseources to help seniors remain healthy and active in their community.  Through this fair, H.O.M.E. provides an opportunity for local seniors to come together and find resources for their growing needs and concerns.

HOW THE FAIR STARTED

photo-2I started at H.O.M.E. last fall as a graduate student intern from the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration.  I come from a long-term care background and so immediately saw myself drawn to H.O.M.E.’s active mission serving low-income seniors, and especially it’s shared living program.

The story of H.O.M.E., entirely based in social justice, resonated with my calling in the field of social services.  The history and the pioneering efforts of its founders, Michael and Lilo Salmon, as well as the story of the tragic death of their daughter Nathalie, truly touched a place in my heart.  It’s probably why the moment I entered the Nathalie Salmon House, something drew me to want to spread the message of H.O.M.E.  I took H.O.M.E.’s story and spread it to my family and my classmates in my field seminars.

One fieldwork requirement for us is to work on a macro project where the intention is to give back to our field placement. The idea for a fair came out of early contacts I made with a few local businesses in the Roger’s Park area that didn’t seem to know too much about the services the Natalie Salmon House, or H.O.M.E., provided.  In efforts to increase community awareness and share the idea of intergenerational-shared living, the Natalie Salmon House will host the Senior Community Fair and Open House.

H.O.M.E. helps low-income seniors in Chicago maintain their independence by providing home upkeep and repair, a shopping bus, moving assistance, and three affordable, intergenerational buildings. To find out more and get involved, click the button below.
