7 ways to volunteer with seniors in Chicago
Happy National Volunteer Week!
Over 500 volunteers each year work with H.O.M.E. to help seniors in Chicago maintain their independence. We thank each of them for their dedication to older adults! Volunteers come as groups of friends, with their companies, or on their own to do good in our community.
From cooking meals or leading an activity for our senior residents to weatherizing homes to walking in the Annual Hunger Walk to benefit H.O.M.E., our volunteers help elders stay engaged, safe, and healthy in their own communities.
There are lots of different ways you can help! Here are some great ways to get involved:
1. Lead an art class
Use your talents to brighten a senior's day. Volunteers lead activities like crafts, Bingo, or Wii games, play music for and with our residents, and enjoy talking with or residents.
2. Throw a party
Bring food, games, and fun for a holiday or a special weekend. This is a great activity for a group who is looking for a fun way to engage with older adults in our community.
3. Paint homes in the summer
Another great group activity! Volunteers provide paint and energy to paint the interior of senior homes. Seniors love not only a fresh coat of paint, but also the interaction with the volunteers.
4. Weatherize homes in the fall
Help seniors prepare for the cold Chicago winters by installing easy-to-use window insullation kits.
5. Be a Guest Chef
Prepare or bring pre-prepared food to share with our residents. Volunteers enjoy a meal with seniors who live at Pat Crowley or Nathalie Salmon Houses.
6. Hold a rummage sale to benefit H.O.M.E.
Follow the lead of our residents! Our residents did some Spring cleaning in 2013 and held a rummage sale. They then generously donated funds received to H.O.M.E. Get your neighbors together to make it a big event!
7. Join us for the Hunger Walk on June 20, 2015
