The Hunger Walk was a Great Success for Team H.O.M.E.!

Hunger Walk 2014 results and how you can help

To be perfectly honest, getting up early enough to be at Soldier Field at 8:00 on a Saturday morning is real stretch for me. I normally like to sleep in and ease into the day with a latte and reading the New York Times. But, every year on one Saturday in June I break that pattern, get up early and head for the lake front to participate in the Hunger Walk. Normally the train is crowded with other walkers and the traffic is backed up on Lake Shore Drive. This year was no exception.

More than 40 of us from Team H.O.M.E. joined thousands of men, women and children on Chicago’s lakefront for the 5K, 3.1 mile Hunger Walk to raise funds and awareness for the fight to end hunger in Cook County. This was by far the largest group of walkers since I joined H.O.M.E. in 2008. Thanks to all of you who joined us.Hunger Walk 2014

What the Hunger Walk means to H.O.M.E.

I participate in the Hunger Walk because it’s a fun opportunity to help ensure that H.O.M.E. earns enough credits to purchase food for the entire next year from the Greater Chicago Food Depository. We provide three meals a day for our Shared Living residents so being able to use our credits to purchase low-cost groceries from the Depository saves us a lot of money.

I also enjoy the walk because it gives me a time to talk with other walkers on our team and get caught up on their lives. Some of our team, like Ursula who was an intern at H.O.M.E. in 2008/09 join us every year and always brings some of her friends. Several of our housing residents participated again this year and we are very happy about that. We were also joined by several members of our Young Professionals Board who have quickly developed into an important part of H.O.M.E.

Thank you again to everyone who walked and donated this year!
