3 easy ways to help seniors at the 29th Annual Hunger Walk

On June 21st, H.O.M.E. staff, clients, board members and other supporters will join thousands of others in the Greater Chicago Food Depository Hunger Walk at Soldier Field to raise fundsH.O.M.E.'s team at the 2013 Hunger Walk and awareness for the fight to end hunger.  The 5K, 3.1 mile Hunger Walk is a fun opportunity for all types of individuals of all ages to help ensure their neighbors get the food they need. The Hunger Walk benefits agencies like H.O.M.E. who are members of the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s network.

This year the Hunger Walk is particularly important to H.O.M.E. because we are reaching the end of the credits in our account at the Depository. We depend on the Depository as a cost-effective source of food to provide nutritious, tasty meals for seniors in our shared living settings at the Pat Crowley House and Nathalie Salmon House. We will receive $12 of credit to purchase food from the Depository for every walker who joins our team. Every dollar raised for our team will go directly to H.O.M.E.’s account as well.

Christine, Mike, and Sue walking for H.O.M.E. at the Hunger WalkThe Hunger Walk is a great way for our clients, staff, and supporters to join together to make a difference. At last year’s Hunger Walk, my wife and I had the privilege of walking with Christine, one our residents at the Pat Crowley House.  At times, Christine needs a wheelchair to get around, but she was determined to complete the walk on foot. While she kept the wheelchair with her “just in case”, Christine was able to complete the course without using it, except for one small incline along the way.

The Walk follows a 5k route along the lakefront, starting and ending at Soldier Field. It’s a good day of fun and a great way to help us with our food budget.

Please join us by registering to walk with us or by donating to the H.O.M.E. team – or both!

There are three ways to help make a difference:

1. Join our team, fundraise, and walk with us

The Hunger Walk is an annual 5K (3.1 miles) event to raise funds and awareness for the Food Depository's work in Cook County and network of 650 agencies like H.O.M.E. The Food Depository covers the overhead expenses for the event so all funds raised can be divided amongst the agencies to help supplement their budgets. This is the largest one-day anti-hunger event in Chicago that brings together all of Cook County.

Registration begins at 7:00 am at Soldier Field. The Hunger Walk begins at 8:30 am. Find H.O.M.E.’s team near the registration table under our banner!

Mike is a guest blogger and H.O.M.E.'s Operations and Volunteer Coordinator.
