LOCATION: Pat Crowley House (1537 W Rosemont Avenue), Nathalie Salmon House (7320 N Sheridan Road), and Blackhawk Manor (4959 W Medill Avenue)
REPORTS TO: Property Manager
STATUS: Non-Exempt, hourly, full-time (9:30-5:30 M-F)
COMPENSATION: $20.00 - $24.00/hour
SUPERVISES: Volunteers and contractors as needed

Housing Opportunities & Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.) is a one-of-a-kind Chicago organization that seeks to foster joy, connection and independence for Chicago’s low-income seniors. H.O.M.E. is a bright spot for all who know it. Founded in 1982, H.O.M.E. has helped thousands of low-income seniors in Chicago maintain their independence by providing a home upkeep and repair service, shopping bus, moving program, and three affordable apartment buildings where seniors can live comfortably in an intergenerational environment. H.O.M.E. is characterized by a warm and caring culture.
Job Description:
This position is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of H.O.M.E.’s Nathalie Salmon House. This includes general cleanliness and appearance of the interior and exterior of the buildings. Also makes minor repairs to general areas and resident apartments. Monitors heating, plumbing, electrical systems and advises building manager of service needs. The individual in this position is based at Nathalie Salmon House, 7320 N. Sheridan Road, Chicago.
Responsibilities:
Building Oversight (40%)
Coordinates with Property Manager preparation of apartments for inspection by external agencies (e.g., CHA, LIHTF); oversees execution of corrective action plans, when necessary.
Monitors condition of properties (building and grounds) recording deficiencies and taking action per procedure.
Ensures that all maintenance requests are handled promptly and that residents are notified of action taken.
Responsible for condition and cleanliness of common areas, including 1st floor kitchen at NSH (appliances, kitchen utensils) and storage areas of both buildings.
In coordination with property manager, oversees outside contractors on premises.
2. Maintenance (60%)
Cleans and maintains public areas at Nathalie Salmon House: lobby, hallways, restrooms, stairwells, community room, compactor room, library, laundry rooms, 1st floor kitchen, garden room, office areas.
Maintains supplies and purchases or coordinates purchase of cleaning equipment and supplies.
Prepares vacant apartments for new residents: cleans under and inside of appliances, thoroughly scrubs bathroom, carpet cleaning, floor stripping and sealing, possible repainting of units.
Provides yard maintenance and snow removal.
Conducts minor repairs such as faucet washers, stopped up toilets, replacing furnace filters, light bulbs.
Coordinates trash removal and prepares for pick up.
Washes windows indoors.
Responds to requests from property manager to for resident needs.
Serves as emergency on-call from Resident Assistants, residents, possibly 24 hrs.
Calls 911 for resident emergencies.
Alerts building manager of mechanical system problems or needed repairs.
Follows annual schedule for building maintenance of all areas.
Performs other duties as required.
Requirements:
Skills
Knowledge of tools, repairs, and building operations.
Excellent communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with older adults.
Ability to oversee maintenance, repair, and decorating with residents’ needs, comfort and safety in mind.
Ability to pro-actively deal with issues related to residents or property to maintain comfort and safety.
Able to focus on cleanliness and safety of building.
Dependable and punctual.
Willingness to pitch in and do what needs to be done.
Holds and is able to live out H.O.M.E. values; values are consistent and congruent across professional and personal life.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Passion for the mission and vision of H.O.M.E.
Experience/Education:
High school graduate or GED.
Work experience in building maintenance.
At least three years’ experience in staff supervision.
Valid driver’s license in good standing.
Experience with the older adult population strongly preferred.
Work Environment:
Work place is a smoke- and drug-free environment.
Intermittent travel to off-site locations may be required.
Occasional night and weekend work may be asked of H.O.M.E. staff.
