Connect, Create, and Contribute this Older Americans Month

May is Older Americans Month - a time to celebrate the talents, contributions, and value of older adults to our communities!

Since 1963, Older Americans Month has been a time to celebrate older Americans, their stories, and their contributions. Led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), the annual observance offers a special opportunity to learn about, support, and recognize our nation’s older citizens.

The theme this year is Connect. Create. Contribute.  This year's theme encourages older adults and their communities to:

  • Connect with friends, family, and services that support participation.
  • Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment.
  • Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.

Here at H.O.M.E. we know that when seniors lesley suzy olga seniorsstay independent and connected to the community not only do those seniors thrive but our community thrives!

Throughout the month of May, H.O.M.E. will celebrate Older Americans Month by promoting ways that community members of all ages can take part in helping seniors in Chicago thrive. We hope that you will join us in celebrating Older Americans Month by doing some of the following:

Connect: Lean more about how programs for seniors like ours can help older adults stay independent and connected to their communities.

Create:  Do you know a senior that deserves a shout out for the wonderful things that they are doing to make their communities better? Tell us about them!  We want to hear about these awesome seniors and highlight those people on our blog!

Contribute: Studies show that intergenerational volunteer opportunities are especially engaging and impactful for both the volunteer and the people being served. Use your talents to make a difference in the lives of seniors by volunteering!
