It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood!

On Thursday, May 2nd, H.O.M.E. held its Annual Celebration Dinner at the Bridgeport Art Center. With nearly 400 supporters in attendance, H.O.M.E. celebrated the neighborhood it has grown to be. The theme, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” centered around Mr. Rogers and his philosophy of love and its effects on community.

DSCN1106We were blessed to have Barbara Mahany, a Chicago-based author and freelance journalist, as our Emcee because she exemplifies what it means to be a neighbor to everyone.

At the event we honored “those unsung heroes,” as Barbara so beautifully phrased it, “who live and breathe kindness, who infuse the Book of Love into the every day — who do it driving a bus, grabbing groceries off a shelf, shimmying under the kitchen sink to pull out old plumbing, who bake pans of lasagna in triplicate, who make friends across generations and without regard to those things the world says divide us.”

These individuals and organizations who have committed their time to helping older adults are: Leona Barth (City of Chicago), Ernest Dixon (H.O.M.E. Bus Driver), Britta Larson (Center on Halsted), Debbie and George Sevilis (long-time H.O.M.E. volunteers) and Friends of Lindsay (long-time H.O.M.E. volunteers).
