How H.O.M.E. is a home-away-from-home for this intern
During these past few months, I have realized how easily a house, a physical building or a place of work, can become a home, a place with emotional attachment, where I feel like I belong.
The staff and residents at H.O.M.E. have embodied the definition of neighbors. They have engaged me in conversation, welcomed me into their personal spaces, and helped me grow into who I am.
My internship was defined by a few different roles: marketing, communication, and event planning. In each of those areas, I gained new skills and experiences with which to leave.
I was blessed to be welcomed into the whirlwind that is housing inquiries. With the help of my supervisor, I called hundreds of people, gauging their interest and need for housing, either in Good Life Senior Residences or our private apartments.
It brings me joy to think of the current residents, and those in whom's moving process I was included in. Knowing that I was a part of something greater than myself warms my heart.
I have always been passionate about social media and online communication. So working with H.O.M.E.’s communication team was a dream come true. I learned how to promote H.O.M.E. to different audiences and highlight our different programs.
Lastly, I have been involved with the planning and execution of our Annual Celebration Dinner. Event planning contains more than I even thought possible, but it has taught me creativity, patience, and selflessness. This event is not for me, but for H.O.M.E.’s donors, residents, and neighbors. That mindset puts everything into perspective for me.
Coming to my internship every day is not just fulfilling daily duties—it’s changing lives.
The various tasks I have completed have impacted someone. And even if it isn’t a client or an older adult resident, I have been impacted by this organization, these people, and this city.
You can make a difference through a gift to H.O.M.E. today.
