How does a ride on the shopping bus keep seniors independent?
May is Older Americans Month - an opportunity to celebrate older adults and celebrate their talents and contributions to our communities! The theme this year is Engage at Every Age which emphasizes that "you are never too old (or young) to take part in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotional well-being."
Earlier this month on our blog we highlighted the talented seniors that live in our intergenerational houses, this week we are are highlighting the incredible seniors that ride our shopping bus!
Last week I had the opportunity to ride the shopping bus with some long time riders that use the shopping bus weekly. One of the seniors told me, “The bus is a fabulous service. If I didn't have the bus I would have to pay $10 a way for a cab.”
Another rider commented that the bus is especially great to have access to in the winter months.
Not only is the bus a lifeline for the seniors it also offers them an opportunity to socialize. Ernest, our bus driver, always tries to make the bus ride a fun experience for all of the riders. We spent the ride to and from the store laughing, joking, and discussing the then-upcoming royal wedding.
Meet Ruth, a 97-year-old rider of the H.O.M.E.’s Shopping Bus!
How is the shopping bus beneficial to you?
I can get all of the the basics that I need.
What is your favorite part about riding the Shopping Bus?
Ernest is always so nice and helpful.
What would you do if you could not ride the shopping bus?
My daughter also helps me and shops for me sometimes.
The theme of Older Americans Month is “Engage at Every Age”, What kinds of activities do you like to engage in?
I like to go on walks, get on the exercise bike, and play cards.
Another way to engage is to share your wisdom, What advice would you give to someone – maybe a young person who is just graduating from high school or college?
Keep Active, eat healthy, and be friendly!
Remaining active and socially engaged can improve the health and quality of life for older adults. H.O.M.E.’s Shopping Bus assists seniors with transport to grocery stores where they have access to food and supplies that are essential to their well-being.
