ENGAGEing in your own well being
This month, we celebrate Older American’s Month and encourage all of our community members to “Engage at Every Age” to enrich physical, mental, and emotional well-being at each stage of life. Being active, participating in social activities, sharing wisdom with members of another generation, and taking steps to ensure mental and physical health are great examples of how to be engaged.
We at H.O.M.E. know that sharing a cup of coffee with a friend or going on an outing with other residents is a great way to engage and these experiences make us feel good.
There is even research to support that positive feeling. According to research conducted by Bryan James, an epidemiologist at Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center in Chicago, study subjects with more frequent social activity maintained lower levels of disability in several areas, suggesting that they may be able to live independently longer than their less social counterparts.
Enabling older adults to live independently is what H.O.M.E. is all about!
One way to be engaged and to enhance our own well-being is to take charge of our health by participating in preventive health screenings.
Fortunately for H.O.M.E., we have a wonderful partnership with the University of Illinois at Chicago’s ENGAGE-IL program through which health professionals work to empower our residents in their own health outcomes.
ENGAGE-IL has developed an interprofessional geriatrics team that works with H.O.M.E. to identify ways in which our community members can increase their knowledge and skills around specific health issues.
WELLNESS FAIR
This month, ENGAGE-IL is helping our residents and other community members to enhance their well-being by offering them the opportunity to participate in a Wellness Fair.
On May 25th, ENGAGE-IL will provide free blood pressure and memory screenings, nutrition consultations, and a medication review with a pharmacist. We are very excited to be able to offer these valuable resources to our residents and other community members. Please share this flyer with anyone who could benefit from this great event.
