Youth group volunteer week

Last week from Monday to Friday, a large volunteer youth group of about 31 members of the  Monroe Congregational Church came all the way from Connecticut to help out the seniors we serve. First they painted the interior of two low-income senior homes for free! That was a big relief for the homeowners' walls and wallets; otherwise they would not have been able to afford such a service.

The next stop for the group was Nathalie Salmon House, where they did some exterior painting, cleaned the common living area on the Good Life Senior Residences floor. Then they made lunch for the residents and hung around afteward to talk.

At Pat Crowley House, the garden, the kitchen and another ten hungry seniors were waiting for the volunteers to arrive and to take care of them. The group split up into three teams: gardeners, cleaners and cooks. While the gardeners were listening to music and getting their hands dirty with weeding and planting, all the closets, tiles and drawers in the kitchen and the hallways got reorganized and scrubbed by the cleaning group. Meanwhile, the cooks prepared tomato soup, fruit salad and grilled cheese for lunch and then served and joined the residents at the table. For dinner, the volunteers made Spaghetti with meat balls, garlic bread, salad and brownies with vanilla ice cream for dessert - there were no leftovers.

The seniors enjoyed having the youth group around and they especially like how the garden turned out: lots of flowers were planted which make the back yard look green, white, red and yellow. Thank you very much Monroe Congregational Church! You've helped us out a lot with your open, friendly and hardworking attitude. We hope to see you next year again!
