March is Social Work Month!

March is National Professional Social Work Month, and this year the theme for the month is “Social Workers Stand Up!” The goal of this year’s theme is to highlight the outstanding contribution of social workers!

Jane Addams, who co-founded the Hull House (the first settlement house in the United States) here in Chicago, is recognized as the founder of the social work profession in the US.

Social work is a rapidly growing profession according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Social workers work with clients of all ages and stages of life; you can find them in hospitals, police departments, mental health clinics, military facilities, and corporations.

Social workers tend to specialize in practice areas such as mental health (37%), child welfare/family (13%), health (13%), and aging (9%). You can also find social workers in government. Over 170 social workers work in national, state, and local elected office, including 2 United States Senators and 4 members of the House of Representatives.

Here at H.O.M.E. we are so thankful for social workers!  Their hard work and dedication makes a difference in the lives of our clients. Social workers at H.O.M.E. serve as board members, coordinators, volunteers, and even write blog posts about social work.

We are lucky to work with many of these gifted people every day, and thank them for all the work they do for seniors. If you are inspired by their work and want to do your part, check out the many ways you can volunteer with H.O.M.E.
