5+ Ways to Celebrate Black History Month in Chicago

Fun Fact: Did you know that the idea for Black History Month can be traced back to Chicago?  Historian Carter G. Woodson, a University of Chicago alum, presented the idea for Black History Month as a way to bring recognition to the contributions of African Americans.  Here are some ways you can celebrate Black History Month here in Chicago this month.  

1. Check out the DuSable Museum

Chicago History Museum (3).jpgThe DuSable Museum of African American History is dedicated to the study and conservation of African American history, culture, and art. The DuSable Museum puts on exhibits and events throughout the year that chronicle the historical experiences and achievements of African Americans.

2. Attend Chicago Urban League’s Film Festival

Every Tuesday this month from 6-8PM  the Chicago Urban League is screening a movie with a discussion following the film.

3. Visit the Museum of Science and Industry’s Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibition

The Black Creativity Program at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry  is the longest-running exhibition of African-American art in the country.  It features more than 100 dynamic works by African-American artists from around the country and many of the pieces were created by Chicago Public School student.

4. Go to the Library

Chicago Public Libraries are hosting events for all ages throughout the city this month. You can find the full list of events here

5. Experience Something New and Unique

There is so much going on throughout the City of Chicago this month to celebrate Black History Month! Events like the Underground Railroad Experience, an interactive history hike and the Chicago Children’s Choir Black History Month Concert Series. Check out some of these events and support black owned businesses in the city.
