4 Tips for staying active in the winter

We've been having a relatively mild winter here in Chicago. Still, there has been plenty of chill in the air, and many gray days. It can be tough to stay active.

Staying active, physically and socially, is important for seniors in particular. Here are four tips for getting out and about during the winter months.

1. Indoor exercises

exercise_class.jpgYou don't have to be a member of a gym to exercise indoors. Some exercises like yoga or tai chi or simply walking in place and stretching can be done at home without a lot of equipment. Walking at indoor public gyms or shopping centers is another good way to get active in the winter. Check with your local park district for classes and facilities, too. Be sure to check with your doctor and use proper techniques to avoid injury.

2. Plan an outing

It can be hard to want to leave home this time of year, but there are certainly many reasons to get out there. With Oscars season upon us, there are lots of movies coming out. Theaters often have special matinee or senior prices on particular days or times, too. Many museums have free days during the slow winter months. If you can brave the cold, it could be a good way to see some art or learn more about history without all the crowds. Check with your local senior center for other winter activities and outings!

Keep your mind active with games and puzzles. Crosswords and sudoku are good options for when you are spending time alone. Card and board games are great for company. Consider inviting friends or family over for a game night.

4. Read on!

A good book is always good company. You can also pair up with a few friends to read the same book. Then get together to talk about what you think of the book. Many books have "book club" questions that you can use, too.

At H.O.M.E., volunteers of all ages join our seniors in staying active. From exercise classes to crafting and game nights to festive parties, there are lots of ways you can get involved all year long. If you are interested, click the button below! We'd love to see you.
