Giving Tuesday Impact Series: An unforgettable move for Sharon

"Thank you and Judy. Never will  forget this.”

Sharon was so grateful for our help moving into an affordable senior building.

This year, Sharon was one of many seniors who moved safely into her new home with H.O.M.E.'s Moving Program.

Moving can be a problem.

When Chicago’s older, low-income renters experience housing problems such as overcrowding, lack of essential ammenities, and costly rents that are out of reach of a fixed income, often the best solution is to move.

Seniors needing to relocate are often physically unable to conduct an arduous move on their own. Too often, they do not have a support network to help them move, and the cost of hiring professional movers is prohibitive.

For low-income seniors, a professional moving company can cost over twice their monthly income.

Being faced with the challenge of paying for a moving service on top of packing up and coordinating a move can be overwhelming.

Fortunately, H.O.M.E.'s moving service for seniors can help.

Move_2.jpgOur Moving Program offers support and assistance through one of life’s most stressful events—moving from one home to another.

In addition to subsidizing moves for those who need assistance based on their income, our  Moving Coordinator is there before, during, and after the move to facilitate a physically and emotionally safe relocation experience for each client.

Moving to a new home can change everything for an older adult.

From being in a healthier living environment to being able to access support services that you need as you age to simply being able to afford rent, a new home can mean a much greater quality of life for seniors.

Sharon, for one, is thankful for the life-changing program this year: “I of course will tell everyone I know how happy I am with the complete service from [H.O.M.E.]"

How you can help

We rely on donations from individuals to help seniors like Sharon when they need it most.

This year H.O.M.E. has joined #ILGive to celebrate Giving Tuesday. Will you mark your calendar for November 29, 2016 to help us reach our goal of raising $20,000 to make a big impact for seniors in 2017?

As a bonus, Bruce Otto, our Executive Director, has agreed to wear a zany Cubs-inpired suit and a hipster-styled wig if we meet our goal. Watch the video here.

You can follow us on Facebook for updates, or sign up to be an #ILGive champion for H.O.M.E.!

This post is part of our series to celebrate Giving Tuesday, which will take place this year on November 29, 2016. The idea behind #GivingTuesday is to kickoff the holiday-giving season, in the same way that Black Friday and Cyber Monday kickoff the holiday-shopping season.
