Don't be bored...Join the Board of Directors!
Boards of Directors are an important part of the leadership of every nonprofit organization. On a personal level, serving on a board of an organization is an active way to be a leader in a cause that you care about deeply. But you may wonder what the meetings and committees are all about.
What exactly does a nonprofit Board of Directors do? BoardSource defines the three main roles of the board as:
- Establishing organizational identity
- Ensuring resources
- Providing oversight
Recently, we welcomed two new members to fulfill these roles on behalf of H.O.M.E.
Tiffany Adams reached out to learn more about H.O.M.E. after seeing our Shopping Bus at a local grocery store. She is an Executive Assistant with the Boston Consulting Group and she completed her MBA at DePaul in 2015. She was previously a member of the board of Thrive Counseling Center. Tiffany and a group of her friends recently acted as guest chefs at the Good Life Senor Residence at the Nathalie Salmon House and had “a wonderful time”.
Brad Winick first connected with H.O.M.E. staff at the Aging in America conference in 2013. He is an urban planner and an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Brad is the founder of Planning/Aging, a consultancy dedicated to helping communities plan for their aging populations. He is the co-author of “Planning Aging-Supportive Communities” and he serves on the board of AgeOptions.
What can Tiffany and Brad expect as H.O.M.E. board members? Other members of our board say:
- “My involvement with H.O.M.E. gives me a sense of meaning and purpose”
- “H.O.M.E.’s board is a fun group, we enjoy each other’s company”
- “I am honored to serve on H.O.M.E.’s board”
Our board members may also reap the professional benefits outlined by Idealist Careers, including:
- Expanding your network
- Raising your profile in your organization and profession
- Strengthening project and team management skills
Board service allows you to support H.O.M.E.’s mission and operations while enhancing your own personal and professional development.
