Volunteers needed this fall: Weatherize homes for seniors

It's almost September and the cooler weather is already on its way. Along with looking forward to seeing honey crisps at the Glenwood Sunday Market and rekindling football rivalries, each fall H.O.M.E. staff gets ready for “weatherization season”.

IMG_9672As much as we hate to say goodbye to summer, we get excited to organize groups to prepare our houses and those of senior homeowners throughout Chicago for winter weather.

Before we know it, volunteer groups will be removing window air conditioning units at Pat Crowley House and Blackhawk Manor. And starting in October, volunteers will also be insulating windows to keep the homes of seniors warm and energy costs down.

Did you know that 86% of the seniors whose homes we weatherized reported having a warmer home in the winter? Some even reported a savings of $50 to $600 on their energy bills. That's a big deal for low-income seniors! You can help make a big difference by organizing a group.

With the help of Peoples Gas, whose grant supports our volunteer program and who has organized groups through their Team H.E.A.T. event for many years, H.O.M.E. helped 35 seniors get ready for the harsh winter we faced last year.

You can volunteer to help seniors living in the City of Chicago, south of North Avenue prepare their homes for the harsh winter months by sealing their windows. It's easy and no experience is necessary. It is a great activity for friends, corporate groups, teen youth or athletic groups, or other small groups!

We provide the window kits that are easy to install plus the necessary tools and training. You and your friends provide the labor and transportation. The results are fewer drafty windows and an instantly warmer home for senior homeowners.

Our waiting list of senior homeowners who have requested help weatherizing their homes continues to grow and we need more help this year. Most groups volunteer on a Saturday, but we can also schedule groups during the week. Click the button below to find out more!
