Five (Free) Ways to Enjoy Chicago Summers

There is nothing quite like the City of Chicago during the summer! There are so many places to go, things to see and activities to engage in (especially now that the weather is finally cooperating with us). 


Here are some ways to enjoy the great outdoors in the City of Chicago this summer:

1. Listen to Music 

If you’re in the mood for some jazz before the Chicago Jazz Festival on September 3-6 then you Should check out these Jazz Festival Neighborhood Nights:

August 15 - Teddy Thomas Sextet - 6-8pm 
Garfield Park Conservatory 
300 N. Central Park

August 22 - Matt Ulery’s Loom - 5-7pm 
Logan Square Roundabout 
3200 W. Logan Blvd.

If you're in the mood for more classical music then check out The Grant Park Music Festival which is celebrating its 81st season with performances on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through out the summer. For a full schedule, click here.  

2. Watch a Movie

Neighborhood parks throughout the city host Movies in the Park. You can enjoy both current and classic movies and even pack a picnic to go with your movie. For a full listing of movies and locations click here

3. Exercise

Millennium Park offers free Summer Workout classes on the Great Lawn. 

On Saturdays between June 6-September 5, 2015 am number of classes are offered though out the morning, such as:

  • 7am - Tai Chi
  • 8am - Yoga
  • 9am - Pilates
  • 10am - Zumba®

On Wednesdays between June 3–September 2, Yoga is offered between 7:30–8:15am.

4. Shop at a Farmers Market

Chicago's Farmers Markets bring a number of vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers to neighborhoods throughout Chicago. Farmers markets are taking place through out the city daily. Many of these markets also accept the LINK card. 

Some of our favorite markets include: 

Daley Plaza Farmers Market (The longest running Farmers Market in Chicago)

Glenwood Farmers Market (where we will be tabling on 8/23 and 9/27!)

5. Check out a Neighborhood Festival or a Parade 

More than 400 neighborhood festivals take place in Chicago each year, showcasing the city's ethnic customs, music and food.

We need volunteers cook on the weekends, entertain and facilitate activities, help at holiday celebrations, garden, paint, and do spring cleaning.
