Catholic Heart Workcamp Volunteers Spend Vacation Giving Back

Vacations are meant for relaxing with friends, sunbathing at the beach, and enjoying a barbecue with the family, but volunteers from Catholic Heart Workcamp found a way to give back during their summer vacation here in Chicago. They spent time painting and cleaning the homes of eleven low income seniors, and two of our intergenerational houses- Blackhawk Manor and Nathalie Salmon House. Their generosity and commitment to serving the elderly was heartwarming for the seniors, with many of them expressing gratitude for the work completed in their homes.

Catholic Heart Workcamp's mission to revitalize communities and beautify homes for the elderly, disabled and those who cannot afford needed repairs aligns with H.O.M.E.'s mission to help low-income seniors maintain their independence by providing free upkeep and home repair, shopping bus and affordable housing. Partnerships like these and our volunteers’ commitment to serving the elderly allow us to continue our work of providing for the seniors in our community.

Volunteers are an integral part of our success, enabling our seniors to maintain their independence while interacting with all age groups. Volunteers support our residents with spring cleaning, gardening, and cleaning out the garage. The time they spend with seniors is often filled with stories ofChicago's history, problems our seniors faced as youth, and life-long lessons. The connections they make keep them coming back, with some volunteering to cook over the weekend or taking time out of their busy schedules for weekly visits with residents with whom they have made a personal connection.
