CNT Energy Savers gives grants to H.O.M.E.

This project came into fruition because of another initiative the Preservation Compact which was formed to protect the affordable housing rental supply from decreasing throughout the city.

The Energy Savers program realizes the important role affordable housing plays to keep people sheltered and safe. Through this program grant funding is available to income-eligible properties, such as H.O.M.E.’s three residential buildings. 

The program provides an audit of the building and a review of the previous 12 months worth of energy bills. Using this information the team is able to make recommendations on what needs to be done in order to have the building operating at its most energy efficient. The grant funding goes toward the cost of the analysis and implementation of the recommendations. Some of the funders sponsoring the program include private foundations, People’s Gas, ComEd, and the City of Chicago.   After conducting audits at H.O.M.E.’s three buildings the Energy Savers team produced audits and recommendations for ways to save money. Then they secured two grants for H.O.M.E. which provided lighting upgrades at Nathalie Salmon House (NSH) and new energy star window air conditioners and refrigerators at Pat Crowley House. Their energy audit predicts we will save $4,000 per year on our electric bills at NSH.

Now they are getting bids from contractors who can upgrade our heating controls and at all the buildings.
