Three Volunteer Opportunities that will have you Falling for H.O.M.E.

Did you know that the first day of fall is a mere seven days away? Fall is a great season for exploring the outdoors, celebrating holidays, making new friends, and spending time with loved ones. It is also a wonderful time of year to volunteer and give back!

Here are three ways that you can engage with seniors in Chicago this fall:

  1. Weatherize a senior's home
You may not like to think about this (I know I don't) but fall is followed by winter, and here in Chicago winter's can be a little extreme (remember last year's polar vortex?). For many seniors extreme winters can take a major toll on their electric bill and can put them at risk of living in unsafe conditions.
You can help low-income senior homeowners living in the City of Chicago prepare their homes for the harsh winter months by sealing their windows. We need volunteers to help weatherize senior homes this fall! It is easy and no experience is necessary.  This is a great activity for friends, corporate groups, teen youth groups, athletic teams, or other small groups.

  2. Serve as a Guest Chef
What's the best part of the fall? Some will say it's the weather, but many others will say it's the food.  Are you someone that likes to cook? You should consider serving as a Guest Chef! It's a great opportunity to engage with seniors and put your cooking skills to the test. You can either bring food that you have already prepared, cook it from scratch at one of our houses, or (for those of you that may not be the most skilled chefs) bring purchased meals. Our volunteers prepare a meal for approximately 12 to 15 residents on a Saturday, Sunday, or during the week throughout the month of September.

  3. Join H.O.M.E.'s Associates BoardAre you interested in learning new skills and meeting like-minded professionals who are passionate about helping seniors? Consider joining our Associates Board! The mission of the Associates Board is to to promote the mission of H.O.M.E. and create the next generation of leaders who will raise awareness of the issues facing older adults through volunteer, social, and fundraising activities.
