Two Resources Older Adults Living in Chicago Should Know About

There seem to be some little known programs and resources out there for older adults living in Chicago that may be beneficial to some senior home owners to know about. We want to make sure you know about the tax rebate for senior home owners and the porch repair program.

  1. Tax rebate for senior home owners

Senior  homeowners in Chicago may be due a REFUND from the county on your property taxes.  While looking up resources on the Cook County Treasurers web page I have found that some of our clients were due a refund, and when I informed them of this they are usually surprised. The amounts seem to vary from as little as $25 to as much as over $400 (which was a nice surprise for a recent client we serves whose dryer had just stopped working). In some cases, the home owner needs to apply for the refund and in others refund would just be sent out.

To see if you have a refund due visit the county website, you will need your property number (pin) found on your tax statement (you can look it up by your address).  Once you enter the PIN, click on the overview of payments tab on the left.  If you do not have access to a computer, you may have to visit the office downtown (118 N Clark St). The phone number to the office is 312-443-5100.

It is important to note that of the clients that I have spoken to that were due a refund they stated it was not shown on the mailed copy of their property tax bill; so, even if you don’t see that there is a refund due on your bill you may still have on coming to you.  Its worth checking out!

  2. Porch Repair Program

The City of Chicago has funds available for income-eligible Chicago homeowners to make repairs on their roofs or porches.

Registration for the City of Chicago’s 2020 Roof and Porch Program is on September 12, 2019 from 9AM to 5PM Call 311 to sign up, you may also be able to access the registration through the web pageIt is important to note that the list is typically full within the first hour so make sure to call early.

Registration does not guarantee automatic participation in the program. Registered participants will be entered into a lottery drawing tht will take place in October. Those selected will be formally notified by mail, and their addresses and confirmation numbers will be posted on this website.
