Mr. S

H.O.M.E.’s Moving Program continues to serve as a lifeline for older adults who need to change their living situations for health, safety, or financial reasons. The only such resource in Chicago, H.O.M.E.’s Moving Program coordinates and underwrites roughly 50 moves each year within the city.

Among the seniors we recently served is Mr. S., a former Motown musician and owner of a mechanic shop. Mr. S., who is visually impaired, was living in an apartment building bordered by two vacant lots that sometimes are the site of criminal activity. The neighborhood lacked stores where Mr. S. could buy necessities, and his disability made it very challenging to travel to other neighborhoods.

He contacted H.O.M.E. so he could move to a safer and more accessible neighborhood. H.O.M.E. lined up a mover for Mr. S., supplied him with boxes and packing tape, and even had the mover make two trips – all at no cost to Mr. S. Thanks to H.O.M.E. and our donors, Mr. S. is now safe in his new apartment with all his furniture, tools, and instruments.
