Rafael
Rafael had lived in his one-bedroom apartment for five years. Unfortunately, over time, a disability had made it difficult for him to navigate the stairs. With help from his social worker, he found a studio apartment in an elevator building. The social worker also told him about H.O.M.E.
As part of our community services, H.O.M.E. operates Chicago’s only moving assistance program for older adults. Each year, we facilitate roughly 52 moves for seniors needing to relocate because of finances, disability, safety, or other reasons. For a very minimal cost (based on a sliding scale), our Moving Coordinator, Judy Taylor, works closely with professional movers to undertake the move. If necessary, she drives them to the new apartment and makes sure they are settled in.
“Oftentimes, the seniors we serve don’t have any other family members. Their friends are just as old as them,” said Judy. “Just to be able to move someone is gratifying.”
On the day of the move, Judy and Rafael supervised the movers, who carefully carried his belongings to the awaiting truck. After one last walk-through, everyone headed to the welcoming new residence, which has a pleasant garden where neighbors sat on benches in the shade.
“I look forward to living a good life here,” Rafael said.
