Sherry
When she goes walking, Sherry gathers large branches from the ground. A Lord of the Rings fan, she later carves and paints the branches and embellishes them with crystals and bits of vintage jewelry, creating wands and staffs that would make Gandalf proud.
Earlier this year, Sherry found herself on the brink of homelessness for the first time in her life. “I was spending fourteen hours a day on the computer, looking for help,” she says.
Eventually, she came across H.O.M.E.’s Good Life Senior Residences, our nationally recognized approach to communal living that includes private apartments, shared meals, outings, activities, and more. A natural “people person,” she jumped at the opportunity and soon moved to the fifth floor of H.O.M.E.’s Nathalie Salmon House.
One of the younger residents, Sherry enjoys the community she has found at Nathalie Salmon House. The residents and staff look out for one another, and she jokes that the food Chef Mona prepares is so good that “you can’t lose weight here.”
“I admire what H.O.M.E. stands for… Hope,” Sherry says. “We live in a world where we need more hope.”
Sherry pictures herself staying on the fifth floor for a long time. When discussing her difficult journey to H.O.M.E., she says, “All the stress is relieved now because I finally have a sense of belonging.”
Even though she loves spending time with others, Sherry values solitude and time to work on her art. At Nathalie Salmon House, she can have both: Sherry has dedicated a corner of her room to serve as an art studio, where she continues to transform branches into magic wands.
