Sharon

Visually impaired and 73 years old, Sharon was living on the 26th floor of an apartment building where the elevators frequently broke down. Because of this, she often missed doctors’ appointments or had to trudge up the stairs for half an hour just to get home. Her friends rarely visited for fear of being stuck in the elevator.

The building was overrun by spiders, and a sewage problem caused a strong foul odor to come through the vents. On weekends, there was no security, so strangers went in and out of the building. The landlord did nothing about these issues.

“I was scared to go downstairs. Scared I wouldn’t get back up.” Sharon was desperate to move but could not afford to do so. “I was going into a depression.”

Fortunately, Sharon contacted H.O.M.E., and we were able to move her into a new building. The moving crew arrived on time, transported her possessions carefully, and set up everything in her new apartment.

“I’m on the third floor now and love it,” Sharon said. “There is a doorman in the lobby, and visitors need to sign in.”

Sharon feels safer and outgoing now. Because she can get out freely, she walks to local stores and the senior center down the street. Best of all, her friends are visiting again.

“H.O.M.E. brought comfort to my mind,” Sharon said, “and made me more vibrant.”
