On the Senior Moments from H.O.M.E. blog, we write about events, issues, and stories that we see in our day-to-day work providing essential services to seniors in Chicago. From poignant moments between staff, volunteers, and clients to sharing information about issues seniors face, we cover a lot of ground.

1. Andrew runs the Chicago Marathon and inspires a community

What fun it was to watch as Andrew rallied his supporters to raise money for H.O.M.E. as he prepared for and ran the Chicago Marathon! It reminds me of the often quoted words of Margaret Mead, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Andrew's efforts, and the generosity of those who donated to his marathon race, were an incredible act of philanthropy in 2015. At H.O.M.E., we depend on donors who come together to change the lives of seniors in Chicago by supporting our work. You can join them in 2016 by giving today.

2. Keeping seniors warm in Chicago winters

It's true that we've had a mild winter up until the past week or so. But for a senior with no heat at all, even mild winter weather can put them at risk.

H.O.M.E.'s Upkeep & Repair program helps people like Mrs. Harper stay warm in Chicago's harsh winters every year. By giving seniors access to affordable, reliable, and quality home repairs, senior homeowners not only have safe homes but also peace of mind.

3. Illinois budget crisis impacts the most vulnerable citizens

The Illinois budget crisis was a big news story for much of 2015, and it sadly still is.

We worked with Forefront (formerly the Donors Forum) to bring you stories of just how this impasse puts Illinois citizens at risk. You can still take action by contacting your lawmakers and the governor.

4. Partners in Independence

Back in November we introduced you to Rob, who is a member of our monthly giving program called Partners in Independence. When asked why he chose to give monthly rather than a single gift, he said, "It's a low hassle way to give, and it means that H.O.M.E. has a predictable income each month."

5. Ethan and Bruce attend their first Chicago Cubs game!

Creating intergenerational experiences are an important part of how H.O.M.E. operates. So it was only natural that our Executive Director, Bruce, and our youngest resident, Ethan, should attend their very first Cubs game together on an outing with other staff and residents.
