Andrew runs the Chicago Marathon to support H.O.M.E.

stringerAndrew Lawton is running the 2015 Chicago Marathon to raise $4,500 for H.O.M.E.

Andrew is my nephew, the second child of my wife Kerry’s sister Rachel Lawton who lives in South Carolina. Andrew has a PhD from Yale and is now a Research Fellow at Sloan Kettering Institute in New York City.He has tried to explain what he does but all I remember is it has to do with killing mice and looking at their brains.

Obviously I’ve known Andrew since he was a baby. I have lots of very fond memories of Andrew—spending hours helping him build a pirate ship with Legos, listening to him play the violin, watching him play UNO with my mother who accused him of cheating. One year while visiting the Lawton’s something happened to their water line and we had no running water. The problem was fixed the day we left; I’ve always wondered if there was a message there for us.

One of my favorite memories was last June when Andrew flew from NYC to Thunder Bay Ontario. His father CE (Charles Edward Lawton—sometimes Chuck Ed), brothers Nate and John Mark, a friend of mine, and I met him at the airport, drove 100 miles west, and then flew about 25 miles to a cabin on Bemar Lake. On the flight the pilot actually let Andrew fly the plane. That was pretty cool, but please don't tell the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. We had a fabulous week of fishing, eating, sleeping, and telling and creating fish stories.

most_photogenicAfter a bout with cancer Andrew trained for and ran the New York Marathon last year. He ran for Fred’s Team and raised $4,226.20 for cancer research, treatment and patient care at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This year he is running in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon for H.O.M.E.

I was very flattered when Andrew said he wanted to run the Chicago Marathon and raise money for H.O.M.E. In May, he began to blog about his decision to raise funds for H.O.M.E. I have to admit that I am very biased but I still think Andrew’s blogs are witty, honest, insightful, and very accurately reflect what we do at H.O.M.E.

Here are my favorite blogs:

Andrew is going to be in Chicago on Saturday, June 25 and we are having a reception for him from 1:00 to 3:00 at Nathalie Salmon House, 7320 N Sheridan Road. I would love it if you would drop in, meet Andrew and encourage him.

Andrew has raised $350 toward his goal so far, and is asking friends and family to donate $26.2--a dollar for every mile he will run in the marathon. Please consider giving him your support.
